Well, Time Mag­a­zine reports that the Nation­al Acad­e­mies of Science’s Insti­tute of Med­i­cine says that’s the fig­ure, any­way. Doc­tors’ slop­py hand­writ­ing kills more than 7,000 peo­ple annu­al­ly.
